Mr. Huang

"Let me tell you my experience of seeing a doctor in the 1990s.  We were referred by our family physician to see a specialist in Chinatown.  The receptionist in the specialist's office was very rude to us.  The receptionist told us to wait for another month before we could see the doctor.  She also called us bad names.  My wife got very mad and quarreled with her.  When the doctor came out to learn about what was going on, the doctor criticized the receptionist.  However, the doctor supported her decision not to let me see him until one month later.

We found out later that the doctor didn't want to give me treatment because I had a government-sponsored insurance card.  The doctor could only charge a very limited fee to the card for his services.  Now we have a 9/11 insurance card.  I hesitated to see doctor because the coverage of this card is also very limited.  We were afraid that a similar experience might happen to me again.

Unexpectedly, from the first day I came to your health center, I felt a different atmosphere.  Everyone in your health center was very nice and kind.  They made me feel warm.  All the staff members who helped me can communicate fluently in Mandarin.  The receptionist had a very good attitude, and tried her best to take an appointment that was most convenient for me.  Your staff members who did the exam for me and who took the blood from me were all very careful, friendly, and enthusiastic.  We would also like to mention Dr. Liu (Dr. Hong Liu, Internal Medicine).  He is sincere, careful, and easy-going.  After a careful examination of my conditions, he explained to me what I should pay attention to in my life so that my diabetes can be better controlled.  He game me very detailed guidance.  He increased my confidence in controlling my diabetes.  He also referred me to see an eye doctor.  I remember I didn't show up for several appointments to see Dr. Liu.  Dr. Liu called my home to urge me to go and see him.  After Dr. Liu found out that I din't want to spend money in buying medications, he gave me a lot of medications for free.  Dr. Liu was not very happy about my not showing up for the appointments and criticized me for not taking good care of myself.  He said that I could not afford any delay in treatment of my diabetic condition.  This criticism made me feel as if I was receiving a kind of care and concern from a family member or a close friend.  Although it was close to winter, I felt like it was spring in the health center.  The medications Dr. Liu gave me save me a lot of money.

I was a senior engineer when I was in China.  I was entitled to receive the best medical care there.  My wife was a health care professional in a very good hospital in China.  When we compared the staff performances in your health center with the hospitals in China, we feel you are much better in both quality of care and professional ethics.  In one word, we were deeply moved.

I would also like to compliment the nurses who did blood drawing for me.  I am fat and I have thin blood vessels.  It is very difficult to draw my blood. In other clinics and doctor's offices, the nurses need to do it several times before they could draw my blood.  But the nurses in your health center got it just one time.  My wife, who has worked in the hospitals in China for many years, was very impressed by the performance of the nurses in your agency.  The nurses talk to me in a friendly way while they are giving me flu shots, which made me feel no pain at all.

I have many words to say but I am too excited to say any more.  I will take your health center as my major health provider forever and I would like to learn to treat other people the same way as your staff.
