Ms. Xu

I, a patient of the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, immigrated to the USA more than 5 years ago. I have encountered a lot of obstacles in my life as an immigrant. In the past, I had no health insurance, didn't know where to get health care. It has been very difficult for me to get a complete physical check-up because I don't speak English.

I was first introduced to the health services at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center by my neighbors. I talked to the lady at the front desk and requested her to arrange a physical examination. She made an appointment for me to see Dr. Tan, one of the internists at the Health Center. I told Dr. Tan that I had a headache and wondered if I had heart disease. Dr. Tan conducted a physical examination for me and also referred me to another department at the Health Center. When I arrived at the department, I saw a lady who looked very passionate and considerate. I felt that this is the person I should talk to about my frustrations and about all difficulties in life caused by limited English ability. She listened to me very attentively and tried to understand my situations, and counseled me on how to resolve issues in life. She then brought me to Dr. Chen. Knowing that I had no health insurance, he gave me free medications, and referred me to Mr. Wong from the Social Work Department. Mr. Wong helped my husband and me file an application form for government health insurance. He followed it up for many times and eventually my husband and I both got health insurance cards. This has helped to reduce my mental pressure and my illness has gradually become better. My problem with seeing a doctor and getting medicines was solved.

I want to thank the Health Center, Ms. Fang (Lin Fang, MSW, Bridge Mental Health Program), Dr. Tan (Internal Medicine) and Dr. Chen (Jian Ping Chen, Bridge Mental Health Program) and Mr. Wong (KC Wong, Social Work). I thank them for their caring and help. This kind of health center really has the people's care at your heart.
