The health education team seeks to improve the health literacy of the community through its outreach activities, health education programs, health fairs, and media education campaigns. Health literacy means access to quality health care information and the ability to use that information to improve health outcomes. The strategies include hosting monthly radio programs where listeners can call in with their questions, publishing newspaper articles, convening regular press briefings on emerging health care issues, conducting community workshops, and disseminating health education brochures and pamphlets.
Health educators collaborate with community partners on special projects, such as hepatitis B screening, healthy heart living, smoking cessation, and diabetes prevention and management. The staff also provides training to area hospitals and clinics on Chinese language and culture, and offers high quality medical translation services. The team has developed English-Chinese bilingual health education materials on more than 200 health care topics.
