"Everyday there was something new to do or learn whether it was about the health care field through the seminars and field placements or even something that I found out about myself through some of the workshops.... I am very thankful for all the wonderful opportunities that Project AHEAD has given me, and for an amazing group of fellow interns who made each day something to look forward to." |
"I definitely think that activism includes more than the publicized and readily visible aspects of activism like protesters and banner wavers. I think anyone who lives in a radical and proactive way to serve the needs of the community and contribution to that in any way is an activist. Both the masses of protesters that march through the streets as well as those who wrote grants and get funding to finance the community initiatives are equally activists that are necessary to bring about change in something. I think all of us in Project AHEAD are activists and that's why we're here." |
"Through Project AHEAD, I have become more aware of my Chineseness and Asianness. I am more comfortable being Chinese. While I can speak Chinese dialects, eat Chinese food, and celebrate Chinese New Year when I am at college, I try to fit in and become "American". But I now realize I should not be silent about my Chinese background. If I do not express my opinions and shatter people's stereotypes of Chinese-Americans, they will continue to perpetuate. I also see Chinatown and the Chinese community from a different point of view. From Project AHEAD... I am beginning to see Chinatown as a community I would like to give back to." |
