Center for the Study of Asian American Health

In 2003, the NYU School of Medicine's Institute for Urban and Global Health received a grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities, to create the nation's first Center for the Study of Asian American Health.  The multi-year grant is devoted to the particular healthcare needs of Asian American communities in New York City and nationwide, providing a central location for the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of health problems affecting these communities.  The mission of the Center for the Study of Asian American Health is to strengthen the current partnerships and develop new linkages with community based organizations and health care institutions that share the goals of reducing health disparities in the Asian American community.

The Center for the Study of Asian American Health is collaboration among the New York University School of Medicine's Institute for Urban and Global Health Centers for Health Disparities Research, the Charles. B. Wang Community Health Center, Bellevue Hospital Center, and Gouverneur Healthcare Services.  In addition, the Center for the Study of Asian American Health works with more than 15 community-based organizations serving the Asian American community.

Together the partners of the Center for the Study of Asian American Health are developing initiatives in four key areas: research, education and training, community assessment, and community outreach.  Staff from the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center are spearheading the mental health research projects and administering the Health Disparities Training Program for the Center for the Study of Asian American Health.  For more information, please visit www.med.nyu.edu/csaah.
