Charles B. Wang Community Health Center and Council Member Sandra Ung Announce Free Hepatitis B Screening Event

New York City Council Member Sandra Ung joined leaders from the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC) Wednesday to announce a comprehensive community health screening event aimed at raising awareness for hepatitis B prevention and treatment. The announcement took place at Council Member Ung's district office in Flushing, Queens.
The "Protect Your Health, Protect Yourself" screening event will be held on Saturday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CBWCHC's 131-72 40th Road location in Flushing. The event will offer free hepatitis B and hepatitis C blood screenings for adults 18 and older, along with free blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol screenings.
"Hepatitis B is a silent killer that can lead to liver cancer and liver damage, and liver cancer causes the most cancer-related deaths," said Dr. Julie Yoko Yoshimachi, Director of CBWCHC's Hepatitis B Program. "Hepatitis B is preventable. It is crucial that everyone is screened, vaccinated, and educated in order to prevent further spread of this virus."
The event will provide community members with access to CBWCHC's trained Hepatitis B Program staff. Attendees can tour clinical areas, speak with experienced health educators, and get assistance scheduling doctor's appointments at the Health Center. Health Center insurance specialists will also be available to help people apply for Medicaid and other medical insurance programs.
"This screening event represents our ongoing commitment to protecting community health through education and early detection," said Yajie Zhu, Director of Health Education at CBWCHC. "By making these screenings accessible and free, we hope to reach those who might otherwise not seek testing."
The Health Center aims to raise awareness about hepatitis B risks, particularly within Chinese American and Asian American communities. Light refreshments and educational materials will be provided to all attendees.
